“Pastoral” (from pastor; Latin for “shepherd”) is a poetic genre presenting an idealized view of rustic life. Originating from shepherd folk songs, it was a popular art form among Renaissance urban poets, disillusioned with and tired of the city life. Pastoral concerns itself with themes of love, death and mourning, “purity” of nature vs. corruption of the city life and longing for the idealized past.
Zaleszczyk–Hamme’s work confronts and explores these themes with the use of traditional techniques by adopting the genre’s conventions of symbolism, eulogy and sentimentality, and re-shapes their narratives in the modern day context, adding personal overtones and ironic subtexts to achieve visual ambiguity.
In her latest body of work, Zaleszczyk–Hamme revisits the themes of flesh and corporeality as part of a broader investigation into the subject of mortality and the synergies of life and death as well as the complexities and precariousness of the human-nature relationship which underpin her artistic practice.
The artist utilises tradiotional oil painting techniques, yet gives them an expe- rimental slant in rendering and demarcating her visual language. The sometimes transgressive tone of Zaleszczyk–Hamme`s symbolism and allegory inspired work conjures up a pecularly distinctive anachronistic mood which juxtaposed with contemporary themes and modern day context land the work its ironic character.
